Abstract: How the adverse conditions prevailing during Covid-19 change through cell phone usage promote economic development. The study was conducted in Alangulam Town Panchayat, Tenkasi District, Tamil Nadu. It was purely an empirical study. Purposive sample methods were adopted, and interview-scheduled tools were administered. One hundred samples were taken from four types of traders, encompassing 25 grocery shop owners, 25 vegetable shop owners, 25 Fruit and juice stall owners, and 25 Bakery with tea shop owners. The primary objectives of the study include: i. To study how small retailers benefit from using cell phones. ii. To identify what type of apps are economically helpful for money transactions for selling and purchasing goods. ii. To analyse how WhatsApp is promoting economic development among retail shop owners. Of the total, three-fourths (75%) of retail shop owners have been using Android or iPhone. Furthermore, four-fifths (80%) of the retail shop owners have been transacting money through Paytm and Google Pay. Two-thirds (66%) of retail shop owners have been operating WhatsApp groups and are aware of the day-to-day market rates and purchasing orders of goods. Among those, one-fifth (20%) of the retail shop owners have lost their money through online transactions. After the COVID-19 lockdown period, 20% of the owners have extended and modified their shops. Additionally, 60% of the owners pay cash on the spot and purchase the goods. 20% of owners have the savings in Banks.
