Abstract: Buying in bulk has become a common shopping practice, with consumers often viewing larger purchases as a way to reduce costs over time. Despite this assumption, it remains unclear whether bulk purchasing consistently reduces household spending. This study examined how individuals decide whether to buy in bulk and howthose decisionsinfluence household spending patterns. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 18 participants representing different household situations. The interviews revealed several common experiences. While most participants believed purchasing larger quantities helped them save money, many also described situations in which bulk purchases led to unplanned spending or faster-than-intended consumption. Participants also discussed product waste, particularly when items expired before they could be fully consumed. Family size, available storage space, and everyday shopping habits were important factors in determining whether bulk buying was beneficial. Overall, the findings suggest that bulk purchasing can provide financial benefits, but those benefits are not guaranteed and depend largely on household circumstances and consumer behaviour. The results highlight the complexity of consumer purchasing decisions and suggest opportunities for further study of spending behaviours in different household settings.
